- Studying of an ecological condition of Lake Ladoga, which is one of the world's largest water body and the largest lake in Europe. This reservoir has a vast value in a life of Northwest region of Russia and, first of all, of Saint Petersburg, as a non-alternative source of drinking water supply. Since 1956 y. the Institute of Lymnology plays a predominating role in carrying out of regular complex researches of lake. Results of researches are published in 12 monographies prepared by Institute of Lymnology.
In 2000-2004 yy. the researches have been directed to the profound studying and generalization of the basic parameters of functioning and evolution of lake’s ecosystem under the influence of natural and anthropogenous factors. On this basis the ecological program of nature protection monitoring was developed. The program included detection of zones of ecological risk and development of a policy of management, protection and sustainable use of water resources of Lake Ladoga. Also it has been directed to the preparation of the law for grant to Lake Ladoga the status of especially protected reservoir within the framework of the legislation of the Russian Federation.
- Studying of Lake Fund of the Country, directed on development of scientific bases of rational wildlife management and restoration of fresh-water bodies:
- The system of early diagnostics of crisis ecological situations in lakes of different type is developed taking into account a natural features of their watersheds;
- Quality standard of an ecological condition of water bodies are developed;
- Essential principles of the forecast of water quality changes in conditions of global change of a climate and intensification of anthropogenic influence are developed for Northwest of Russia;
- Scientific bases and methods of restoration of lake ecosystems are developed for different kinds of anthropogenic influence.
- Development of methods of mathematical modelling for forecast of influence of anthropogenic factors, global and regional climatic changes on a water regime of lake, taking into account changes of a procedure of water use and character of man activity in the watershed.
- Significance of subglacial water bodies in preservation of water organisms during last glaciation is shown for Northwest region. To pioneer the ways and stages of formation of the fish population of internal reservoirs and a fresh-water complex of fishes of gulfs of Baltic Sea are designated and characterized on this basis. Ways of penetration to mentioned reservoirs of southern kinds through basins of Dnepr and Upper Volga are recognized. Also, for the first time, the picture of formation of an area of the Atlantic salmon and its parasite salaries during last glacial age and subsequent postglacial period is shown for North of Europe.
- The reports of a condition of a fish industry of internal reservoirs of Russia were prepared including such directions as pond and industrial fish-farming. For the first time, the review of sources on acclimatization of fishes in reservoirs of Russia from XVIII century to the present time was realized. It contained the data more than by 60 kinds of fresh-water and sea fishes. The analysis of results of acclimatization works was given. Their significance as one of directions of fish resources formation was shown. Prospects of this fish industry measures were appreciated.
