Applied aspects of the scientific research

Except for the fundamental scientific research the Institute actively develops solutions in the area of applied issues. The most important of them are:

• Recommendations on the restoration of the ecosystems of small lakes after different types of human impact (the removal of the bottom sediment, the discharge of water from electric power stations, recreation, and others);
• Recommendations and actions for the restoration of large lakes: Ladoga, Sevan, Ilmen, Vozhe, Lacha, and Balkhash;
• Methodical bases for the prevention of quick reservoir sedimentation;
• Measurements and recommendations on regulation of the processes causing anthropogenic eutrophication of lakes;
• Actions on the protection and rational use of lakes of the far North polluted with oil as a result of geological surveys;
• Technology and a special compound (Biosorbent) for the cleaning and restoration of aquatic objects (lakes, swamps) and seacoasts, subjected by oil spills.

Information connected with studying and practical use of water resources of Lake Ladoga is supported by the new generation WEB-technologies developed by experts of Institute of Limnology RAS. This system is based on the results of complex monitoring of Lake Ladoga in the area of hydrophysic, hydrochemia and hydrobiologia. Measurements are carried out at stations located over water surface of the lake.

The system works on a site in a mode on-line. The system provides opportunity for users to work with the removed data.

Research associates of the Institute present legislative initiatives concerning the problems of environmental protection and ecological expert. The Institute carries out special works on the creation of geoinformational systems (GIS) for individual lakes of Russia and all over the world. GIS are needed for an assessment of lake water resources, for use as reference materials in solving a wide range of scientific, economic, and environmental protection problems as well as for the organization of tourism and other recreational activities at lake basins.

Employees of the Institute act with legislative initiatives on problems of preservation of the environment and ecological examination.
